What is widely recognized as the most powerful marketing strategy to grow your off-line or online business?

Without a doubt, it is the joint venture or marketing alliance. Typically, a joint venture is a partnership between two or more companies with like customers in non-competing businesses who are endorsing the products or services of their partners to their customer and prospect lists.

A joint venture eliminates a lot of expense in prospecting for new clients because you are using the assets (goodwill) of partners to reach prospective clients. Most businesses spend all their marketing dollars to reach 100% of an audience but only get business from a fraction of it. Alliances allow you to focus your efforts on people who are ready to buy. Businesses typically have established trust and a reputation with their clients. Another business will have to spend a huge sum to create the same trust.

Why are they so effective?

Three words sum up the reasons - TRUST, LEVERAGE and NUMBERS. Review this list about who is the easiest customer to acquire:

1. The easiest person to sell to is an existing customer

2. The next is a past customer

3. The third easiest is a prospect referred or endorsed by another person

4. The most difficult to sell to is a cold prospect

An endorsement leverages the trust that another business has built with their customers. The numbers come from and are dependent on the size of their database (This is another reason for making sure you have a detailed database of clients and prospect. Let’s use the common occurrence of selecting an automobile mechanic. We’ve all had the experience and the same thoughts. How can I find someone who is competent, trustworthy and charges a fair price? You can ask co-workers but they may not live anywhere near you. You can go to the Yellow Pages but how do you make the right choice when all the ads say the same thing?

What if you go to the same dry cleaner every week or have a weekly cleaning service for your office or home? What if they giver you coupon or a flier that says something to the effect of “In need car repairs? We use, trust and recommend XYZ Automotive for all of ours. Use this coupon for a 10% discount on your next repair.” You ask them about the shop and they tell you about the great work at a fair price. Where are you most likely to go for your repair? XYZ or someone in the Yellow Pages? XYZ will definitely be high on your list.

There are several keys to a success joint venture but at the top of the list are the commitment to the partnership, a clear understanding and agreement on the performance standards of each partner and a method to track results. Remember, a JV is another element of your marketing strategy that you devote time and resources to create and manage so approach it as you would any other significant marketing investment. You also have the added responsibility to insure that your partners meet your quality standards, have similar objectives and fulfill their end of the agreement.

How do you find JV and Alliance Partners?

You first need to step back and ask yourself, “What kind of customer do I have? Why do people come to me? What related products or services do they want, need or could they be interested in? What would they be pre-disposed to buying? What do I know about their likes, dislikes, demographics and buying habits?”

Your next step is to locate various companies that have customers similar to yours. Here are some examples of possible partnerships

  • CPA - Attorney - Financial Planner
  • Spa - Florist - Greeting Card Store
  • Landscaper - Maid and Cleaning Service - Lawn Maintenance
  • Plumber - Carpet Cleaner
  • Doctor - Dentist - Pharmacy
  • Party Planner - Photographer - Rental Company
  • Chiropractor - Health Food Store - Yoga School
  • You get the idea - find someone who has clients similar to yours

Take some time to brainstorm the possibilities and look beyond the obvious. Ask your staff and your customers for ideas. Look to your supplier and customers for potential partners because a relationship and degree of trust already exists with them. If you meet someone at a networking event, ask them about their business and customers. Probe for similarities in your customers and prospects.

The third step is to contact your potential partners to propose the alliance. Call them and explain the JV concept and how you believe your companies may have a match that will benefit both of you. Propose cross-mailings or cross-coupons. Establish a method to track results. Set a plan of action both/all of you agree to follow and commit to for a three to six month period. If something works very well, do it again.

Joint ventures and alliances can easily bring you and your partners a flood of new business. They can also become somewhat complicated and require formal agreements and the advice of attorneys. It really depends on your business model and goals. Personally, I’ve seen and been involved with everything from a simple mailing to a small list for a local company up to and including multi-million dollar international agreements with large corporations. The commonality between the small and large has been the benefit of leveraging the list, expertise and trust built between the partners.

As you learn and succeed, look to expand your alliance partners. Always be looking for ways to leverage your knowledge, services and list beyond your own business and the rewards can be quite lucrative.

Hurricane Spring Training?

Getting ready for the hurricane season.

That’s right! Spring training for baseball is in full swing, but it’s not the only “training” going on right now. Just like the ballplayers are practicing and preparing for their regular season, so should residents be getting ready for hurricane season. During the next three months, before the start of hurricane season, there are several things that are already being done. There are also things you should be taking care of, too.

Although June 1st is the official beginning of the annual hurricane season, there are many things being done now. On the “public” or governmental side, local Emergency Operations Centers are busy preparing their plan for the upcoming season. The American Red Cross is also gearing up, ready to move at a moment’s notice to aid in disaster relief. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will hopefully be up to the task, after several stumbles in the past few active hurricane seasons.

The 2008 National Hurricane Conference is being held in Orlando, Florida, March 31 - April 4. The purpose of this conference is as follows (from the NHC website): The primary goal of the National Hurricane Conference is to improve hurricane preparedness, response, recovery and mitigation in order to save lives and property in the United States and the tropical islands of the Caribbean and Pacific. In addition, the conference serves as a national forum for federal, state and local officials to exchange ideas and recommend new policies to improve Emergency Management.

Also on the calendar, the 2008 Florida Governor’s Hurricane Conference is being held in Fort Lauderdale on May 12-16, 2008. This event will have several programs for state, regional, and local agencies in preparing, responding, and recovering from a tropical storm or hurricane strike.

During the months of March and April, all forms of media begin to focus their efforts towards the upcoming season. Newspapers begin working on their hurricane guides. Local television stations are busy updating graphics and preparing for their all-important “Hurricane Special” to be aired just before the season begins. Then in May, along with area radio stations, they start plugging the hurricane information they placed on their websites. Advertisers begin to jockey for positions in the best promotional spots. This is the start of a very productive season for everyone involved with the media monster.

Ok, you might think that you’re off the hook until June. Not so fast. There are things outside your home, as well as indoors that need to be taken care of now. Instead of “spring training”, you could call this “spring cleaning”.

How Sugar Is Causing You To Have More Skin Wrinkles

If you want younger looking skin, there’s now yet another reason to avoid piling on the sugar when it comes to your diet!

Sugar in the diet leads to the creation of advance glycation end products, or AGE proteins as they’re also called (how appropriate!), which damage the skin’s cells and lead to those pesky wrinkles we work so hard to eradicate.

The good news is that there are ways to slow the creation of these AGEs and keep your skin looking more youthful longer. After all, who doesn’t want to look the best they can and as youthful as they can?

So what exactly does sugar do to your skin, and what can you do about it? Well, let’s find out right now.

What does sugar do to cause accelerated aging?

AGEs are essentially proteins that are created whenever sugar bonds with proteins in the bloodstream. According to a study that can be found in the British Journal of Dermatology, these effects are typically seen around the age of 35 in the form of the creation of new wrinkles, the lack of collagen and elastin, the absence of which makes the skin more easily damaged and wrinkles appear more pronounced, and the more sugar you eat, the more obvious the effects will become.

Another effect of AGEs is that they essentially turn off the natural antioxidants in your body leaving it even more vulnerable to the effects of the sun and many illnesses that these very important antioxidants typically ward. For this reason you need to not only cut back on the sugar, but also avoid too much sun exposure, and make sure that you have plenty of antioxidants in your diet and skin care regimen.

What Can I do about it?

The good news is that there are actions you can take to essentially reverse the damage that may have already been done.

The first thing you need to do is to avoid excessive refined sugars.

This doesn’t mean you can’t have any sugar, it means though that you should watch the intake. Try to have less than 10 teaspoons a day. Believe it or not, many people have about 30 teaspoons a day!

The second thing is to have a low GI glycemic index (GI) diet, which will eliminate many of the less healthy sources of sugar from your diet, leaving you with sugars that do not raise your blood sugar level nearly as much.

The GI diet assigns a glycemic value to foods on a scale of 1-100. There are those that are low, medium, or high on the glycemic index and dieters are encouraged to consume more foods that rate lower on the scale and fewer foods that rate in the higher ranges of the index. What this accomplishes is the levelling of your blood sugar, which is great for your skin and the personal war most are waging against wrinkles.

Some examples are green leafy vegetables and fruit, lean sources of protein rich food such as eggs, fish, chicken, tofu and yoghurt.

So there you go. You now know the reason why sugar ages your skin, and what you can do about it!

Treasury securities are one of the safest ways to invest your money and get a stable return. There are some trade-offs to be expected with such a safe return, but the rewards can offset them. Let’s take a look at some of the types of treasury securities available and what you can expect from them in terms of safety and return.

The primary treasury security available is the Treasury bill or T-bill, for short. They are issued by the US Department of the Treasury and are sold at a discount from face value. These are generally short term investments that mature in less than one year, and do not pay interest until the maturity date.

Another type of treasury obligation is known as a treasury note. It differs from the Treasury bill in that it matures in two to ten years, and issue interest payments (known as coupon payments) every six months. They are issued with two, five, or ten year maturity dates and have par values of $1,000 to $10,000.

A third type of Treasury security is known as the Treasury bond, and has the longest maturity of all the Treasury securities. The maturity period for these is usually 30 years, and like the Treasury notes, have coupon payments every six months. These are no longer available directly from the Treasury department, as issuance of this type of bond was discontinued in 2001. They are, however, still traded widely on the secondary market and will continue to be until the last one matures in 2031.

A fourth and final type of Treasury security is known as the Treasury Inflation Protected Security or TIPS, for short. This security differs from the other securities in that the principal or par value of the security is adjusted for inflation over the period of maturity. The amount of adjustment is coupled with the Consumer Price Index. As a result, the coupon payments on a TIPS will differ by the amount the principal has been adjusted. This has the end result of protecting the investor against the degrading effects of inflation on the principal value of the investment.

Treasury securities are widely considered to be a very safe investment because they are backed by the US government, the largest economic power in the world. Because of the relative safety of these investments, however, the yield on these securities is low in comparison to other municipal bonds or corporate bonds. The primary goal for someone interested in investing in these securities should be capital preservation rather than growth.
